STEVE COPE

Steve Cope graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art, and received his MFA from Boston University.  A long time fixture of New York and Philadephia art scene, Steve has taught at the New York Studio School among other places. His exhibition history is extensive having been both privately and publicly shown. While he painted large scale works for years, recently he changed his format to miniature panoramic landscapes with the impact of monumental work of art. The works are painstakingly rendered to the utmost detail.

“To augment the experience of a vast space I use a very small format.  I am fascinated with reducing the bigness of our worldly experience to something very small, something that fits in our hand and I wonder how this changes or heightens our perception. The fascination could be that we can see it all in one glance. We don’t have to see it as a collection of parts, but as a full thing, solid and complete. Perhaps being able to see the entire landscape so completely gives us a feeling of discovery, as if we are peering into a different world strangely similar to our own.

The ring is like a memory or visit, a longing.  It also adds something very synthetic to what would be a pretty natural image.  It taps us on the shoulder and reminds us this is a painting.”
