“My pieces are often a conglomeration of unrelated ideas that somehow just seem to work together. I try to think about a series of disjointed or unconnected things and place them in new relationships to each other. I have a tendency to pick and choose my cultural references at will. Exercising unrestrained disregard for tradition or convention gives me the ability to process new ideas rapidly. My background in video and web production provides me with an idiosyncratic perspective for approaching my art and subject matter. One does not often associate digital media with ceramics. I also observe how graphic designers apply their designs to various objects. This gives me additional insight for approaching a 3-D form.” Max Lehman

ANDY LIBERTONE

Andy Libertone moved to Colorado in 1969 after recieving his MFA from Stanford University and BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Libertone has taught at such various institutions as the University of Colorado, Boulder, University of Colorado, Denver, Metro State, Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and Red Rocks Community College. Andy was a founding member of Spark co-op gallery and has exhibited his work in galleries, institutions and the public throughout Colorado and the west.

“As a visual artist I execute my ideas in sculpture and drawings. My motivation for these sculptures comes frmo my love of jazz music, architecture, industrial and auto based imagery. I am visually absorbed by these things and construct pieces that incorporate these influences by balancing solid forms and open spaces and orchestrating colors in steel and wood.

My recent extension into large geometric powder-coated steel sculptures has proved to be a rewarding expansion of my artistc vision.”

“My work takes its cues from visual perception, perhaps calling to mind naturalistic form, depth, light, and so on,  though they’re not representational per se. I’m interested in the way the mind tries to find a meaningful signal, even where only noise exists.

I like to approach paint not just as color to apply here or there, but as viscous fluid with distinct physical properties that tends to behave in specific ways. Like any material it has its own nature, and my relationship with it is sometimes to subvert or bend it in a certain direction, and other times to make space for it to do its own thing.”

JAMES MCELHINNEY

JAMES MCELHINNEY

JAMES MCELHINNEY

James McElhinney is an author, visual artist, oral historian, independent scholar and publisher. In his recent works, McElhinney turned his attention to the Rio Grande, following the historic river across New Mexico, collecting images and stories along the way. From these materials, he developed a suite of paintings and color intaglio prints, adding to the growing conversation around one of America’s greatest waterways.

“To understand landscape, one must know one’s location, study the terrain, considering the process of nature and human activity that modifies the terrain over time. Drawing and painting provide me with modes of engagement, and the means to develop sensory experience into a species of knowledge that gives rise to ideas. The hope is that my efforts will inspire others to explore their own homes, settlements, lands and waterways, to discover these wonders anew, perhaps with a sketchbook in hand.”

– James McElhinney

McElhinney attended Tyler School of Art (MFA Painting), Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and Yale University (MFA Painting). He has received numerous honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is also a published author who has conducted numerous oral histories and interviews for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the Frick Center for the History of Collecting, Columbia University INCITE for the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Center for Southern Jewish Culture, Vermont Studio Center, VoCA, Voices in Contemporary Art, other foundations and private patrons. McElhinney is listed on the Master Artist Council of the Arthur Miller Foundation and is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner 2017 artist grant.

AMY METIER

AMY METIER

AMY METIER

Amy Metier was born in Wyoming and grew up in Colorado. She obtained a B.F.A. from Colorado State University, an M.F.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder and was a professor of art at Community College of Denver and Metropolitan State University of Denver. She currently lives in Boulder and maintains a studio in Denver. This exhibition marks Metier’s 14th solo show in Denver and the 9th with the William Havu Gallery. Metier has been awarded artist residencies at the American Academy in Rome, Italy; the Ballinglen Foundation in Ireland; the Alfred and Trafford Klots/MICA Foundation in Brittany, France; the Vermont Studio Center in the U.S., and the La Napoule Foundation in France. Amy’s work is in private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Denver Art Museum and the Kirkland Museum.

“The work in this show has been inspired by my time painting at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, an artist’s residency in County Mayo, Ireland. Some paintings are influenced by a specific place; others respond to the light, the changing weather, the history, the ancient spirits and the mystery that infused my time and experience there. Each painting develops intuitively and the process invariably involves reworking, visibly painting out areas, even completely starting over to meet an elusive end goal that exists in my subconscious.”
