CHRIS CASSIMATIS

CHRIS CASSIMATIS

CHRIS CASSIMATIS

Chris Cassimatis received a Bachelor of Science degree in Art from the University of Oregon. His interest in stone sculpture solidified during an intensive summer course offered by the university. After graduating, Chris further honed his skills by attending symposiums in the Pacific Northwest, and working at an architectural stone-carving studio in Texas. His current practice is most influenced by sculpture from the mid-twentieth century. Chris lives in Salt Lake City where he works full-time as a sculptor. His work is in both private and university collections.

“If art was ever contained, it has long since destroyed its boundaries. I am not interested in further expanding its definition. I choose to work with traditional materials as a means of maintaining a lineage within sculpture. The familiarity of stone, steel, and wood is an essential part of my work. My explorations of form and mechanics resonate from ideas that have been passed down through the long history of sculpture.”

MICHAEL CLAPPER

MICHAEL CLAPPER

MICHAEL CLAPPER

Originally educated in design at the Wendell Castle School in Rochester, New York, Michael now focuses on creating contemporary public and residential sculpture.

The winner of numerous commissions and awards, Michael maintains a studio in Denver Colorado. Michael has taught at the Genoa School for Design in Ithaca, New York and more recently for both the Industrial Design and Art Departments at Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado. Michael has also been invited to participate in several international sculpture symposiums where he has welcomed the opportunity to exchange ideas and techniques with people from other cultures.

“I feel that my work, created mostly from carved stone and fabricated steel, tells its story through a visual language of dignified restraint. By using materials such as stone, metal and carved graphics, I intentionally compose a natural palette of color, pattern and texture that are inherent within the materials themselves. But it is my ability to provide public artworks that convey the site’s story through a powerful simplicity of form that I am most proud.”

STEVE COPE

STEVE COPE

STEVE COPE

Steve Cope graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art, and received his MFA from Boston University.  A long time fixture of New York and Philadephia art scene, Steve has taught at the New York Studio School among other places. His exhibition history is extensive having been both privately and publicly shown. While he painted large scale works for years, recently he changed his format to miniature panoramic landscapes with the impact of monumental work of art. The works are painstakingly rendered to the utmost detail.

“To augment the experience of a vast space I use a very small format.  I am fascinated with reducing the bigness of our worldly experience to something very small, something that fits in our hand and I wonder how this changes or heightens our perception. The fascination could be that we can see it all in one glance. We don’t have to see it as a collection of parts, but as a full thing, solid and complete. Perhaps being able to see the entire landscape so completely gives us a feeling of discovery, as if we are peering into a different world strangely similar to our own.

The ring is like a memory or visit, a longing.  It also adds something very synthetic to what would be a pretty natural image.  It taps us on the shoulder and reminds us this is a painting.”

STEPHEN DINSMORE

STEPHEN DINSMORE

STEPHEN DINSMORE

Stephen Dinsmore’s paintings can be found in public and private collections both nationally and internationally.

Dinsmore, a Nebraska-born artist, presents paintings that testify to the vitality of representational art as a means of communicating visual poetry. His paintings may border on the abstract being a synthesis from several sources; in other instances they may convey a more specific sense of place and time.

Dinsmore states: “For me painting means being always on the lookout for an image/idea that excites.

Sounds straightforward but it’s nothing like a straight line. So many things count: the creamy light of late afternoon on landscape; the abstract beauty of marks on the side of a train car; new snow that reshapes all it touches; an interior filled with color and reverie; the riveting beauty of a vase of flowers; a fly fisherman in shadow; a disregarded corner of town; a found image…

I try to make a painting that has in it at least something of the magic and mystery of the thing; the alchemy; the thing that excites.”
