JAMES MCELHINNEY

James McElhinney is an author, visual artist, oral historian, independent scholar and publisher. In his recent works, McElhinney turned his attention to the Rio Grande, following the historic river across New Mexico, collecting images and stories along the way. From these materials, he developed a suite of paintings and color intaglio prints, adding to the growing conversation around one of America’s greatest waterways.

“To understand landscape, one must know one’s location, study the terrain, considering the process of nature and human activity that modifies the terrain over time. Drawing and painting provide me with modes of engagement, and the means to develop sensory experience into a species of knowledge that gives rise to ideas. The hope is that my efforts will inspire others to explore their own homes, settlements, lands and waterways, to discover these wonders anew, perhaps with a sketchbook in hand.”

– James McElhinney

McElhinney attended Tyler School of Art (MFA Painting), Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and Yale University (MFA Painting). He has received numerous honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is also a published author who has conducted numerous oral histories and interviews for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the Frick Center for the History of Collecting, Columbia University INCITE for the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Center for Southern Jewish Culture, Vermont Studio Center, VoCA, Voices in Contemporary Art, other foundations and private patrons. McElhinney is listed on the Master Artist Council of the Arthur Miller Foundation and is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner 2017 artist grant.

AMY METIER

AMY METIER

Amy Metier was born in Wyoming and grew up in Colorado. She obtained a B.F.A. from Colorado State University, an M.F.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder and was a professor of art at Community College of Denver and Metropolitan State University of Denver. She currently lives in Boulder and maintains a studio in Denver. This exhibition marks Metier’s 14th solo show in Denver and the 9th with the William Havu Gallery. Metier has been awarded artist residencies at the American Academy in Rome, Italy; the Ballinglen Foundation in Ireland; the Alfred and Trafford Klots/MICA Foundation in Brittany, France; the Vermont Studio Center in the U.S., and the La Napoule Foundation in France. Amy’s work is in private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Denver Art Museum and the Kirkland Museum.

“The work in this show has been inspired by my time painting at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, an artist’s residency in County Mayo, Ireland. Some paintings are influenced by a specific place; others respond to the light, the changing weather, the history, the ancient spirits and the mystery that infused my time and experience there. Each painting develops intuitively and the process invariably involves reworking, visibly painting out areas, even completely starting over to meet an elusive end goal that exists in my subconscious.”

DENNIS LEE MITCHELL

DENNIS LEE MITCHELL

DENNIS LEE MITCHELL

VDennis Lee Mitchell captures elusive and ephemeral smoke on paper in his unconventional drawings. He applies acetylene torches directly to the surface of archival paper, creating rich brown-blacks and faint gradations left by moving smoke. The finished works require multiple preparatory drawings, as Mitchell attempts to chart the course of airborne solid and liquid particles. The resulting imagery evokes natural forms such as landscapes and plants, yet remains captivatingly abstract.

Mitchell holds an MFA in Ceramics from Arizona State University, and both an MA and a BA in Ceramics from Fort Hays Kansas State University. Mitchell is an emeritus Professor of Art at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. His work is held in public and private collections internationally, including the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City; the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; the Illinois State Art Museum, Chicago; the Racine Art Museum, Racine, Wisconsin. Mitchell exhibits his work in art fairs and galleries nationally such as the C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore, MD, Zolla Leiberman Gallery in Chicago, IL and the William Havu Gallery in Denver, CO.

LOLA MONTEJO

LOLA MONTEJO

LOLA MONTEJO

Through varied techniques and processes, Lola Montejo creates paintings which are emergent and sharp, offering complex layers and assemblages of the emotional, intellectual, and active. Believing that her paintings are a manifestation of emotion, time or memory, her work serves as both representational and abstract, reflecting her inner world and the environments around her. Montejo rearranges viewing and thinking about certain schools of art, and in the process, produces something more akin to what might be called expressed abstractionism.

Montejo (b.1973) emigrated from Spain to the United States where she received: a BFA from the Metropolitan University of Denver; graduate studies at the University of Colorado (Denver) in Pedagogy; and an MFA in Studio Arts from Azusa Pacific University in California. She currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado, and is a Professor at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, where she teaches painting and drawing.

Montejo’s work has been exhibited in Colorado, California, Texas, Mexico City, and Berlin; and can be found in private and museum collections throughout the United States, Spain, and Mexico. She is represented by William Havu Gallery in Denver, Colorado; Oehme Graphics in Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and Moberg Gallery in Des Moines, Iowa.

STEVE MURPHY

STEVE MURPHY

STEVE MURPHY

“I am dealing with the classic elements of sculpture; form, volume, surface and edge. This current, nine-year body of work is the result of a continued reductive investigation of those sculptural elements. Minimalism is not strived for in these pieces but is referenced as a result of reducing these elements to simple yet engaging geometric formats.

Many of my pieces have curved bottoms and incorporate the element of motion. I also find it interesting to position pieces that do not move to a few degrees off of plumb and center to imply arrested movement.

I work within a limited range of shapes, edge treatments and angles of repose. Juxtaposing these elements into multiple formats is the primary focus of my continued development of this body of work. Each piece starts out with the development of a two dimensional profile. When the profile and the stance is deemed right, it needs the 3rd dimension, depth. This is achieved by thinking of the profile as a seashell. How and where the two opposite hand forms are separated and or remain attached defines the volume and offers up how the edges will be treated with the maximum width typically being at the bottom of the piece. I do resort to the weighting of some forms to get the stance to my liking. It has to be believable, even if unattainable without the ballast, to maintain the desired orientation.

My intent is to be nonspecific in alluding to recognizable objects, in other words, non-objective. The titles given to each piece, must work on multiple levels of interpretation so as not to be construed as dogmatic or overly descriptive but more poetic in nature.

I want the viewer to bring their personal references to the work and find their unique connection to the pieces. I want the pieces to allow the viewer to slowdown, have a quiet, meditative like experience when contemplating these works, and hopefully walk away with a fresh way of seeing and experiencing the world around them.”
